Cervical screening (a smear test) checks the health of your cervix. The cervix is the opening to your womb from your vagina. Cervical screening is one of the best ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer. It is not a test for cancer, it’s a test to help prevent cancer.
All women and people with a cervix between the ages of 24 and 65 should go for regular cervical screening. You’ll get a letter in the post inviting you to make an appointment. The GP’s at Davyhulme Medical Centre would strongly advise you to have this painless screening test.
IF YOU ARE NERVOUS OR EMBARRESSED ABOUT HAVING THIS TEST, PLEASE BOOK A TELEPHONE CALL WITH ONE OF OUR PRACTICE NURSES. They can talk you through the process and reassure you that this test is quick and painless.
Trans men and non-binary people who have a cervix should also attend regular screening, but may not receive invitations through the national screening programme. If this affects you then you can contact the practice to discuss whether you should have cervical screening.
If you have any symptoms of cervical cancer then please make an appointment at the practice, even if you have had a recent normal smear test. Do not wait to have your next screening appointment.
